Twist and Shout with Beatlemania at the Melbourne Athenaeum

Beatlemania on Tour, the popular live tribute show dedicated to the legendary band The Beatles, has treated Melbourne to two performances at the Athenaeum Theatre on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October.

The show opened with one of my all-time favourite Beatles tunes Twist and Shout, which set the scene for this fabulous Beatles extravaganza.

Many other of the Beatles numerous hits were performed during the show, including Can’t Buy Me Love, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Help, She Loves You, Revolution, Get Back, Rollover Beethoven, Back in the USSR, Nowhere Man, Lady Madonna, Ticket to Ride, Day Tripper, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Yellow Submarine and Here Comes the Sun.

The show began with “The Beatles” performing at the Star Club in Hamburg, during the early period of their career before the Band was world famous, and when Pete Best was still their drummer.

The next set moved to the telling of their rise to fame and proceeded to run through periods of The Beatles recording albums, touring, appearing on television, making movies and generally becoming megastars.

The costumes for each set were appropriate for each era and took us back to the Beatles heyday right along with the music.

The final set change was the Psychedelic era with the amazing Sgt Peppers costumes included, which were bright and dazzling!

The encore was the classic Hey Jude, which had the audience all up on their feet singing along to this well-known tune.

The Beatlemania performers consist of Cameron Charters (as Paul McCartney), Zac Coombs (as John Lennon), Brent McMullen (as George Harrison) and Ben Harper (as Pete Best at the beginning of the show and then changed to Ringo Starr).

All of the performers were highly engaging and the whole evening was extremely enjoyable.

The music, costumes, storytelling and humour were a winning combination.

The show began at 8pm and finished at 10:30pm. There was a half-time break in the middle.

Upcoming performances for Beatlemania in Australia will be in Newcastle on the 18th October, Sydney on the 21st October and the Gold Coast on the 28th October.

If you are a fan of the Beatles music then this is definitely a show for you to see.
